Introduction

By organizing this symposium, we try to bring together a variety of scientists, who share an interest in the separation and characterization of large molecules. The target audience includes specialists from the analytical-chemistry, polymer-science and life-science communities. We will create a platform for scientists from diverging backgrounds and with different current perspectives to interact, to discuss subjects of mutual interest, and to discover new synergies.

The hub of the meeting is the large exhibition hall, where scientific posters will be displayed and discussed, instruments and consumables will be exhibited, and vendor seminars will be held.

Types of Presentations

Oral presentations

Regular submitted lectures are intended for the presentation of recent research results that are of interest to a large fraction of the delegates. 20 min are allocated for the presentation (including discussion).

Keynote lectures

These are meant to cover recent results and to put these in a broader perspective. For this reason, keynote lectures are a bit longer than regular oral presentations (30 min, including discussion).

Tutorials

Tutorials are intended to familiarize (Ph.D.) students and other newcomers with a certain research field within the scope of the conference. Tutorials are “HOW” lectures (HOW to apply characterization tools? HOW to interpret the results? etc.). After following a tutorial lecture delegates should have the necessary background to attend more-advanced lectures on the subject. Tutorials take 40 min and, because of the educational character, a hand-out will be provided (while supplies last).

State-of-the-Art overview lectures

These are new in the programme of SCM. They are intended to review recent important developments in a certain area. SotA overviews are “WHAT” lectures (WHAT has been happening in this area? WHAT is hot? etc.). SotA overviews are intended for scientists with a basic understanding of the subject, but with limited exposure to actual research in the area.

Plenary lectures

The few plenary lectures during SCM-5 are intended to focus the attention of all delegates on some key areas. This is achieved by world-class speakers with the ability to captivate large audiences with diverse backgrounds.

Poster presentations

Most of the scientific contributions are in the form of poster presentations. Posters are the most-suitable format for discussing well-defined subjects in significant depth. They allow intensive discussion between scientists with shared interests. Posters will be on display during all three days of the conference (tentatively from 11:30 on the Wednesday until 15:00 on Friday). There will be designated poster sessions, during which all presenters of odd-numbered (Wednesday) or even-numbered (Thursday) posters must be available to present and explain their work. On Friday afternoon there will be a special display of the posters nominated for the SCM award.

Poster boards are approx. 1,80 m high and 90 cm wide. Posters of Din A0-format (84cm x 119cm) (portrait mode) will fit perfectly.

Product seminars

Product seminars will be organized during the lunch breaks or the afternoon .

Lectures will be presented in two parallel sessions. The working language of the Symposium will be English.
